چکیده

Equilibrium models of differentially rotating nascent neutron stars are constructed, which represent the result of the accretion induced collapse of rapidly rotating white dwarfs. The models are built in a two-step procedure: (1) a rapidly rotating precollapse white dwarf model is constructed; (2) a stationary axisymmetric neutron star having the same total mass and angular momentum distribution as the white dwarf is constructed. The resulting collapsed objects consist of a high density central core of size roughly 20 km, surrounded by a massive accretion torus extending over 1000 km from the rotation axis. The ratio of the rotational kinetic energy to the gravitational potential energy of these neutron stars ranges from 0.13 to 0.26, suggesting that some of these objects may have a non-axisymmetric dynamical instability that could emit a significant amount of gravitational radiation.

Gravitational Radiation from Rapidly Rotating Nascent Neutron Stars

We study the secular evolution and gravitational wave signature of a newly-formed, rapidly rotating neutron star. The neutron star may arise from core collapse in a massive star or from the accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf. After a brief dynamical phase, the nascent neutron star settles into an axisymmetric, secularly unstable equilibrium state. Gravitational radiation drives the sta...

Effect of Differential Rotation on the Maximum Mass of Neutron Stars: Realistic Nuclear Equations of State

The merger of binary neutron stars is likely to lead to differentially rotating remnants. In this paper, we survey several cold nuclear equations of state (EOSs) and numerically construct models of differentially rotating neutron stars in general relativity. For each EOS we tabulate maximum allowed masses as a function of the degree of differential rotation. We also determine effective polytrop...

Where May Ultra-fast Rotating Neutron Stars Be Hidden?

The existence of ultra-fast rotating neutron stars (spin period P ∼< 1 ms) is expected on the basis of current models for the secular evolution of interacting binaries, though they have not been detected yet. Their formation depends on the quantity of matter accreted by the neutron star which, in turn, is limited by the mechanism of mass ejection from the binary. An efficient mass ejection can ...

Radio Transients from the Accretion Induced Collapse of White Dwarfs

It has long been expected that in some scenarios when a white dwarf (WD) grows to the Chandrasekhar limit, it can undergo an accretion induced collapse (AIC) to form a rapidly rotating neutron star. Nevertheless, the detection of such events has so far evaded discovery, likely because the optical, supernova-like emission is expected to be dim and short-lived. Here we propose a novel signature o...

Gravitational Radiation Limit on the Spin of Young Neutron Stars

A newly discovered instability in rotating neutron stars, driven by gravitational radiation reaction acting on the starsÏ r-modes, is shown here to set an upper limit on the spin rate of young neutron stars. We calculate the timescales for the growth of linear perturbations due to gravitational radiation reaction, and for dissipation by shear and bulk viscosity, working to second order in a slo...
